Museums do not work in isolation, there core work is governed by government legislation protecting the museums collections, the public that visit them and the staff that work there. They must also adhere to health and safety, fire, COSHH, british standards etc. regulations.
They are expected to adhere to codes of ethics guidelines set out by professional bodies, e.g. Museum Associations.
They are also expected to improve intellectual and physical access for as wide a range of the community as possible.
As professional institutions, they are expected to be the authority on authenticity in their specialist fields. |
