Pest control | Anoxia .
. Anoxia, absence of oxygen, is an effective way to treat an infestation and is safe for most objects. An inert gas is pumped into an enclosed environment and oxygen is replaced, without this oxygen, insects will suffocate and the infestation will be halted.

Large objects must placed in an enclosed airtight chamber. Levels of oxygen must be reduced to 0.1% to be fully effective. Carbon Dioxide or nitrogen can be used to replace the oxygen at a temperature greater than 25 degrees Celsius. The construction, or adaptation, of a suitable airtight chamber may be expensive and this treatment can take up to three weeks to be fully effective but at the end of this period the gases can be released safely into the atmosphere.

Small objects can be treated by sealing inside an airtight bag containing Ageless™ oxygen scavenger packets. These packets consist of active iron oxide powder inside a porous container. Oxygen inside the bag reacts with the iron oxide powder to further oxidise. Although heat and moisture are also produced by this reaction, if kept away from the object, this will not be sufficient to present a problem to the object. This treatment will only work when there is a limited amount of contained oxygen to remove.
